Music Declares Emergency's Co-Executive Director Lewis Jamieson reflects on the success of the NO MUSIC ON A DEAD PLANET campaign, which brings together artists, music industry professionals and music fans to press for an immediate governmental response to the climate change emergency to protect all life on Earth.

When we launched Music Declares Emergency in the UK in 2019 it was unique. There were already labels and organisations and individuals working towards a more sustainable future but nowhere in the world was there a place where an entire industry could gather together to use their financial and cultural power to frame a positive response to the climate emergency.

Our formation created that space and contributed to the momentum that now sees the UK music industry recognised as a leader in the innovations and new business practice driving a green revolution throughout music.

We began with the belief that music can change the world. We still believe that. But now we can prove it.

Powered by our NO MUSIC ON A DEAD PLANET campaign, we have reached over 550 million music fans worldwide, with the support of superstars including Billie Eilish, WILLOW, Foals, Mel C, Radiohead and far too many more to mention individually.

Thanks to Peter Saville, Jamie Reid, Smiley Company, V23, Raissa Pardini and others we have placed the imagery of music into the climate debate, energising and encouraging thousands to wear and share our message through a range of t-shirts.

Our work has spread from the UK, with Music Declares present in fifteen international territories, driving engagement with more artists, businesses and fans, allowing us to craft truly global responses to the emergency.

With our declaration now boasting over 9000 signatories, including 4000 recording artists, we continue to act on behalf of those supporters in the most impactful ways.

We are proud to support the Music Climate Pact and to be instrumental in the creation and launch of the Sounds Right initiative, recognising the vital contribution of nature to music by assigning royalty streams from designated tracks to environmental programs that protect some of the world’s most important and at threat ecosystems.

Our free to all Music Climate Pack has been downloaded by thousands, providing an entry point for all in music to understand where they can make a difference.

We were honoured to be the first environmental campaign to work with the BRIT Awards with Mastercard in 2024, launching the NO MUSIC ON A DEAD PLANET Movement, a fan engagement arm of MDE empowering close to 10,000 music fans at the time of writing to take actions that have delivered tangible positive results for our environment.

What comes next? The climate emergency is more strident and more urgent than ever. It affects our world directly, cancelling festivals, disrupting tours, adding costs to business. More action is urgently needed.

We will deepen our work with the music industry, building on the great work already out there and connecting to fans to show how the music they love is also protecting the world they love.
We will support artists to speak out, acting as a guide and cheerleader, creating spaces and opportunities to create the most impact from their commitments.

And we will always believe that music will change our world for the better.
