The BPI has launched the BRITs Apprentice Scheme, which gives ten people from England and Wales a unique, high quality, paid opportunity to work at a top independent record label or music company, learn about the recorded music industry, receive practical ‘hands-on’ experience, develop relevant skills and make key contacts.
The BPI appointed DiVA Apprenticeships to work with the host companies to recruit and train their apprentices. We caught up with Arit Eminue, Director and Founder of DiVA to find out more about how they work with employers and talent.
Who is DiVA?
DiVA is a recruitment and training organisation that specialises in connecting creative industries to talent through apprenticeships in business, creative and digital. We work with some of the UK's leading brands and including Universal Music Group, Warner Music, PPL, PRS, Coda Agency, Dawbell, the Southbank Centre, All3 Media, Endemol Shine, BBC Worldwide, UK Music.
How did DiVA get involved in the BRITs Apprentice scheme?
The BPI approached us with the idea. We have been working with employers in the music industry for some time with great results. The BPIs ambitions matched our mission, which is to provide access to the creative industries to a diverse talent base. Any scheme that offers the level of access and opportunity that the BRITs Apprentice Scheme does is right up our street!
How do you support companies in the music industry?
We start with where they’re at. Could be providing prospective employers with information and advice to develop a job role that meets their needs and explaining how the apprenticeship programme will work. In other cases, our support extends to shaping existing graduate schemes or internal staff training into apprenticeship programmes.
We take the hassle out of recruitment by managing the process on behalf of the employer. We also provide ongoing account management of the apprenticeship programme, which includes being on call to answer any questions they may have and troubleshooting when required.
How does the recruitment process work?
Finding the right talent is crucial as the end game for most employers and apprentices is a full-time job. Our recruitment service is free, bespoke to each business and includes, marketing the role, short listing, pre-screening, and organising interviews. It is up to the employer to decide who they want to take on.
Is there any financial support for businesses looking to offer an apprenticeship?
Yes. Employers may be entitled to a financial incentive of £1,000 per apprentice, subject to eligibility. Best to call our office for more info.
Is there any financial support for businesses looking to offer an apprenticeship?
Yes. Employers may be entitled to a financial incentive of £1,000 per apprentice, subject to eligibility. The government will also contribute 90% towards the cost of the training or fully fund it, in some cases. Best to call our office for more info.
What’s the biggest misconception that employers have about apprentices?
Most people believe apprenticeships are only for young people or new hires. The truth is, apprenticeships are for anyone – from school leavers to graduates, existing staff, and new recruits. Apprenticeships start at GCSE level all the way up to MBA level. They cover areas such as general business administration, marketing, and leadership and management. They are a great way to train up new and existing staff.

Any tips for talent looking to apply for the BRITs Apprentice Scheme?
Read the job description thoroughly, research the company then tailor your application to the job. Also, show not tell! By this I mean avoid clichés like “I have excellent communication skills” or “I’m passionate about music.” Your application is the perfect example of your communication skills and passion manifests itself into action. Tell us how many gigs you attend, the music projects you have been involved in and don’t be afraid to draw on transferable skills. If you’re at an early stage in your career all experience is worth including, such as volunteer work and your stint at McDonalds!
Check out our YouTube channel for tips on how to complete an application form and ace your interview.
