The 2010 BPI & UKTI Los Angeles Sync Licensing Trade Mission

Welcome to the BPI Los Angeles Sync Licensing Trade mission page on the BPI website. For those reading who don’t know, every year along with the UK Trade & Investment office in London & LA we organise a three day event in the very centre of the music entertainment capital of the world which involves taking a very disparate bunch of UK independent music companies to learn about the increasingly important sync licensing market meet and network with some of the most important music supervisors and placement executives in Los Angeles.

2010 LA Sync Mission report

LA Sync Mission Delegate Feedback……………

Can honestly say the whole soirée was of great value to Raven Black Music and Exposure Music Awards! We were introduced directly to the people who buy in Music for TV & Film in an environment where we were able to begin to build ongoing business relationships. Tiz a bit indirect as we were put in touch with a UK co by a fellow delegate and we’ve signed a global deal for Synchro into secondary markets like Brazil & Korea etc……..Still plenty to go at on the Hollywood front though and looks like I’ll be making another trip out there Aug/Sep to try and move things forward

Mission was a great success with strong leads and opportunities with music television for widespread international broadcast of archived live shows from Band on the Wall Manchester. Also had really positive feedback on our Music catalogue from 3/4 music supervisors, with high possibility's for near future syncs.  Also I'm meeting the UK consulate whilst in Mexico after introductions at the mission, which has been an incredibly worth wile asset to my Recording sessions whilst in their country.

I have tracks sitting with a supervisor at NBC Universal for a new series that have been favourably reviewed, but nothing solid as of yet.....I can see that two other supervisors have D/L'd tracks I've put towards them in the last 48 hours also. So things are moving in the right direction.

I really enjoyed the mission which helped to create new relationships as well as cement existing ones. The panellists on the trip were first class and I was already receiving emails about our music whilst still in LA.  I’m very confident we will secure sync’s as a direct result of the trip.

Off the back of the mission I set up a meeting with a music supervisor who was formerly working in advertising for CBS Radio, now he has a few hush hush things coming out of the wood work, mainly a new reality TV series. I have to be vague about it but it looks like we have got the first look in, he likes our stuff so I expect a deal with this guy.

The UKTI/BPI mission to LA was a very well put together and high end programme which gave unique access to some of the key decision makers in the sync world of film, TV and gaming.  We were able to build on existing relationships and develop new ones also. In our case I'd say it was about 50/50 in terms of developing exiting/new contacts. In particular we (Penny Black) now have strong relationships with CBS, Lionsgate and NBC as well as developing the ongoing partnership with Cellar Music.

The BPI Trade Mission to Los Angeles was an exceptionally well planned and well executed trade development initiative. Freerange’s role as part of the mission was to introduce 3 Northern Ireland companies representing the copyrights and IP of over 35 artists to the opportunities offered to music rights holders by the LA based multimedia industries. Each of the Northern Ireland companies were able to greatly expand their knowledge of this important sector and to instigate what I believe will be very fruitful and financially rewarding long term partnerships with the LA industry. As part of the programme for delegates on the Sync Mission, two time Grammy Award winning producer and manager Peter Asher recounted some of his adventures with The Beatles and Apple in the 60s; managing, producing and working with superstar singer-songwriters James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, Carole King & Randy Newman in the 70s; working with Cher and 10,000 Manics in the 80s; and a host of other names in the 90s & 00s including Morrissey, The Dixie Chicks and Billy Joel, The Webb Sisters and right up to latest client and near neighbour, Pamela Anderson. Peter Asher Presentation – BPI Sync Licensing Mission 2010

Peter’s presentation went through many of the lessons that working with such great artists had taught him over his career as a manager and a producer. Simple caveats such as finding great artists; believing 100% in them; honesty and listening to what artists say were all pointed out as obvious, but good starting points. More pragmatic advice to the delegates such as ‘worry about everything’ and leave no stone unturned in your efforts to get the artist out there in front of the audience followed and the presentation ended with an audience sing-along of his 1964the US #1 ‘A World Without Love’.

Peter Asher will be the subject of a Music Week Masterclass feature in July.

BPI Mission company announces new sync success…….

As the 2010 BPI Sync Licensing mission to Los Angeles gets under way (being rescheduled after April’s volcanic ash disrupted air travel),  ARC Music - one of the 43 delegate companies attending the event - announces a  placing of 4 of their titles in the major new Walt Disney  movie ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time’.

Two tracks by Hossam Ramzy (‘Lucy The Magnificent’ and ‘Arabian Knights’) and a track each from Deben Bhattacharya (‘In Praise of Krishna’) and Zarbang (‘Circle in Seven’) are featured in the soundtrack.

Based on the popular video game series of the same name, the film is produced by Pirates of the Caribbean’s Jerry Bruckheimer and stars Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain, Jarhead), Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace, Clash of the Titans) and Ben Kingsley (Gandhi). The plot follows Prince Dastan (Gyllenhaal) and Princess Tamina (Arterton) in their quest against dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the Sands of Time -- a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

Jon Entwistle, Head of ARC Music says of the placement;

"We are delighted to have four tracks from our world music catalogue being used in various scenes in "Prince of Persia : The Sands of Time". We started pitching music for this movie over a year ago and all our hard work and patience has finally come off".

ARC Music has one of the largest collections of world and ethnic music with over 700 albums in their current catalogue. Music from ARC has been used in some of the biggest cinema releases of recent years including 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and 2006’s James Bond Casino Royale film. Placements of ARC’s music catalogue has also been made in the TV shows Law and Order, Without A Trace, Jackass, Wildboyz, Scarred and commercials from Budweiser, Nike, McDonalds and Galaxy chocolate.

Julian Wall BPI Director of International Events, who is organising the sync-licensing trade event, says;

“My highest congratulations go to ARC Music on this incredible success. The BPI mission is designed exactly to help companies in this part of their business and I look forward to other delegate companies reporting similar success stories”.
